Lumen Prints

The Lumen Print is essentially, a solar photogram.  It is an early photographic process, first developed in the 19th century.  The subject matter is placed on black and white photographic paper and then left outside for the sun to develop it.  The tone of the image is determined by many factors such as strength of the sun, humidity, emulsion, time.

What brought me to lumen printing was....recycling.  I had amassed a large amount of photographic paper that could no longer be printed on. However, I couldn't bear to throw it out.  Reading some photo news one day, I came across lumen prints and realized that would be an excellent way to recycle my fogged paper.  Since then, I began experimenting with different papers, different techniques to yield different textures, and suffice to say, I fell in love with this method of printing.  Please view my galleries of the various series I have created using this process.  Any questions or comments can be directed to my email.
